The Vitebsk region is located in the northeast of the country and borders with Lithuania, Latvia and Russia. Two international trans-European corridors (Paris - Moscow, Helsinki - Vitebsk-Gomel-Kiev-Plovdiv) pass through its territory. The largest cities are Vitebsk, Orsha, Polotsk, Novopolotsk.
The nature has generously presented with woods (32 % of the territory), a freakish mosaic of lakes, the deep rivers (more than 600). Pride Vitebsk land are national parks of Braslav Lakes and Berezinsky forest reserve. These are unique on beauty and not having analogues in Europe reserves. There is a number of reserves republican value, is protected more than 40 nature sanctuaries in the territory of the region. A perfect environment enable to develop foot, water, bicycle, ecological tourism.
On the Vitebsk land the most ancient cities of Belarus Polotsk (861), Vitebsk (974), Orsha are located. More than 30 state museums and 16 branches are visited to tourists, 42 palace-park manors are under protection of the state here. The numerous monuments of a history and culture of slavs were saved in ancient Polotsk. The life and creativity of known educators and art workers are connected with Vitebsk land: Ephrasinia Polotskaya, Symeon Polotsky, Frantsysk Skaryna, the artists Mark Shagal, Ilya Repin, Ieguda Pen and Kazimir Malievitch, the writers Ioann Bunin, Yanka Koupala, Vasiliy Bykov, Vladimir Korotkevich. It annually are spent about 20 large festivals and holidays which receive visitors from many countries of the world in the region.
